About

I started Maghreb to Mashriq in an effort to provide accessible analysis of the Arabic-speaking world and its neighbors. Maghreb is the Arabic word for the western extent of the Islamic World (generally Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia) and Mashriq is a term generally used to describe the eastern Arab world (generally the Levant plus Iraq). My aim is to provide quality, accessible, and interesting content that improves our understanding of the Middle East, its people, history, and culture.

Musings on the History, Politics, and Cultures of the Middle East

Over the past twenty-five years, the region has been prominently featured in both the Western press and entertainment media, most often through the distorted lens of war, fanaticism, and terrorism. These portrayals often simplify complex peoples, cultures, and their desires, aspirations, and their struggle navigating life. The goal of Maghreb to Mashriq is to provide an accessible and accurate source for improving one’s understanding of the region.
